Quantifying angular clustering in wide-area radio surveys

چکیده

We quantify the angular clustering of radio galaxies in the NVSS and FIRST surveys using the two-point correlation function and the moments of counts-incells – both important points of comparison with theory. These investigations consistently demonstrate that the slope of the correlation function for radio galaxies agrees with that for optically-selected galaxies, γ ≈ 1.8. We describe how to disentangle the imprint of galaxy clustering from the two observational problems: resolution of radio galaxies into multiple components and gradients in source surface density induced by difficulties in processing “snapshot” radio observations (significant in both surveys below S1.4GHz ∼ 15 mJy). This study disagrees in some respects with previous analyses of the angular clustering of radio galaxies.

Astrophysical and Cosmological Information from Large-scale sub-mm Surveys of Extragalactic Sources

We present a quantitative analysis of the astrophysical and cosmological information that can be extracted from the many important wide-area, shallow surveys that will be carried out in the next few years. Our calculations combine the predictions of the physical model by Granato et al. (2004) for the formation and evolution of spheroidal galaxies with up-to-date phenomenological models for the ...

The Phoenix radio survey: the angular correlation function

Using the Phoenix radio survey, a homogeneous survey selected at 1.4GHz and covering an area of ≈3 deg, we analyse the clustering of the sub-mJy radio population using angular correlation function analysis. Extensive simulations are carried out to investigate the significance of the estimated angular correlation amplitudes. Our analysis show that for the S1.4 > 0.5mJy sub-samples the radio sour...

The correlation function of radio sources

We investigate the large-scale clustering of radio sources in the Green Bank and ParkesMIT-NRAO 4.85GHz surveys by measuring the angular two-point correlation function w(θ). Excluding contaminated areas, the two surveys together cover 70 per cent of the whole sky. We find both surveys to be reasonably complete above 50mJy. On the basis of previous studies, the radio sources are galaxies and rad...

Measurement of the angular correlation function of radio galaxies from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey

We quantify the angular distribution of radio sources in the NVSS by measuring the two-point angular correlation function w(θ). By careful consideration of the resolution of radio galaxies into multiple components, we are able to determine both the galaxy angular clustering and the size distribution of giant radio galaxies. The slope of the correlation function for radio galaxies agrees with th...

Wide field x-ray telescope a moderate class mission

Sensitive surveys of the X-ray universe have been limited to small areas of the sky due to the intrinsically small field of view of Wolter-I X-ray optics, whose angular resolution degrades with the square of the off axis angle. High angular resolution is needed to achieve a low background per source, minimize source confusion, and distinguish point from extended objects. WFXT consists of three ...
